I was looking forward to Taco Tuesday at what was once of my favorite Mexican restaurants, Amigo's at 47th & Shawnee Drive in Kansas City, Kansas. It was previously owned by Anthony Vann, who now owns Parkway Grill, inside the Ramada at Shawnee Mission Parkway & Metcalf. I found out he no longer owns Amigo's because there is no way in hell, he would have allowed the selection and service to go as far downhill as it has. No Choriqueso dip. The server didn't even know what that was. A guy on the wait staff gave me both hot and mild salsa but when my salsas ran out, she asked if I wanted a refill on my salsa, of course I said yes, both please. She didn't understand that both means both hot and mild salsa, not one kind of salsa in both dishes. When I ordered, I asked her what the difference was between traditional and deep fried tacos. She couldn't accurately give me a description between the two. She said the deep fried were fried and the traditional wasn't. She then said I'll give you the deep fried and if you don't like them I'll give you the traditional. They gave me what appeared to be the traditional. I tried to complain to one member of the wait staff about the elimination of half the menu items and he said "yeah, we got rid of about half the menu items", I said why, he said "new ownership got rid of the old menu and made a new menu". I said there's no choriqueso dip, no tamales and the taco dinner wish was also marked down on Tuesdays no longer was. I also told him I didn't get so much as an apology for how I felt, he said "that's the way it is, you're not the only person looking at the menu". I was infuriated at the poor quality of customer service I received. The waitress was a blond bimbo, the other wait staff were douchebags and finally I talked to the manager, who was also a blond bimbo, though an older one, so you can mix in "hag" to that description. I attempted to complain to her what was going on about how I got served an attitude instead of what I wanted and she kept interrupting me. She refused to listen to me. When she kept interrupting I became irritated at her, she then insinuated I was causing a scene. I then said "I'll never come back here again", but before I could even get that out she then said "I'll get you a box for your food you can pay your tab and never come back to this restaurant again". I said "You don't run me out of here, I quit. This was once a good Mexican restaurant and you're running this place to the ground". I asked her for a to go cup, she then said "we don't give out to go cups", even though they used to, when Anthony used to own it. Six months ago, I bought an Amigo's t-shirt. I will be giving it to charity because I can no longer promote a place which used to be one of my favorites, when it is now clearly not. To the new Amigo's, you have lost a customer for life. BOOOOO YAAAAHHH!!!!

Not far from home. Typically PACKED. Recommended by some friends. All systems GO. Went early (5 pm) and the place was empty. Server immediately brought salsa and some of the BEST warm, fresh chips I've ever had. Yum. She neglected to bring water. That's a must when serving chips and salsa. The server was friendly, but service was remarkably slow considering there was our party and only one more. Ordered a chimichanga with ground beef. It was HUGE and delish. Perfectly fried with the typical sides; beans and rice. All in all; not bad. We'll definitely go back. Did I mention those chips?

Used to love coming here a whole lot more before the ownership changed. They here recently went through a reimaging. Did away with the pool table, changed what seems like the entire staff, and redesigned the menus and it's selections. I don't feel as welcom as I did before since I had a friendship with a lot of the staff, and the food seems to have lessened in quality. It's still cheap and affordable food though if you check out the daily special on Tuesday. If you need a cheap sit down place, it's not a bad option. Just don't expect much.

A must is to follow Amigos on twitter to get the daily specials. You can't go wrong there. I like Amigos. I could be borderline in love with the place. The Amigo dip is creamy white cheesy goodness. You can't go wrong there. They have this dish called torpedos. Little chimichangas of love! Get the carne asada ones with a little Amigo dip over the top and you are in HEAVEN! The chicken tacos are a must. The meat is flavorful and well seasoned. With a side of fideo or charro beans - YUM-O!

I wanted to give Amigo's 5 stars but we had a few minor issues. My boyfriend and I went there with his family for dinner on a Friday night. They were pretty busy when we got there. We had 6 in our group, the hostess made us wait. We stood around for a good 10-15 minutes while she tried to find a place to seat us. There were several tables that we all could have sat at. It wouldn't have been a huge deal to wait, but there was nowhere for us to sit while we waited. They finally pushed two tables together for us. After we all ordered our food and they brought it out instead of bringing our food straight to our table they sat it on the table next to us and it sat there several minutes before our server finally brought it to us. The food was really good and the prices were fairly reasonable, but the service needs a little work.

The food here is hit or miss. I went with a party of six and the reviews were mixed. The main reason we didnt come back though was because they dont know how to make a decent margarita.

It's ok food. Maybe I have yet to have a stand out dish to bring me back... Plus too close to so many outstanding authentic Mexican restaurants in the KC area.

Yum. Just yum. Amigos has something for everyone. They make an outstanding margarita. Their tacos are muy bueno. The guacamole is fantastic. The service is fast and friendly. This place is great for families, for girls night or for catching a game (big screens on every wall). Go there.

Went here today for lunch. It said please wait to be seated, so I waited... and waited. and then decided just to sit at the bar. Like Jen said, it's part Mexican restaurant, and part sports bar. They have one pool table in a separate area and it looked like some arcade games across the room, also separated, And they had 6-8 big screen tv's all turned to sports. I had the 2 enchilada lunch special. For the price it was worth it. Decent lunch price and the food was decent. It wasn't anything to get overly excited about. As I ate it, i did kinda noticed that it was rather bland. Not a lot of flavors going on. The portions were decent for a lunch plate. I'm not sure I could have eaten much more. My food did come out hot and pretty fast. Free chips and salsa, again the flavor of the salsa was just ok. I don't like a lot of heat anyway but i could taste the tomato juice. Almost had that marinara taste to it. Now this was the mild so maybe the hot has some kick. The bartender was pretty nice. It was a nice small casual spot which was perfect for what I wanted. Cheap, good food, nice environment. And it's close to home, so I will be back.

Used to love this place. Prior to my last visit we came in for lunch ordered drinks but no one every took our order. So we left. Last week decided to give it another chance at lunch. At 12 noon there were about 10 people in to whole restaurant. Ugh oh. Ordered taco lunch 'special'. $7.99 for two greasy tacos and what appeared to be bean gravy masquerading as refried beans. For $4.99 I'm not sure it would have been a good deal. Audios Amigos!

This establishment goes through servers like its nobody's business. You won't see the same faces if you come in 2 weeks from now. The "salad" was literally shredded lettuce and 3 slices of onion. For $17.99, you'd expect to get a good meal, but unfortunately I got frozen shrimp as tiny as could be. That's not all though, I asked for triple meat fajitas, they charged me for triple meat fajitas, and they brought me out chicken fajitas. How nice are they to tell me what to eat! I recommend not coming here, they'll be closed soon anyways due to their poor customer service, lack of attention to detail, and sub-par food.

So glad they put a sit down restaurant in this area. Taco's are great (Tues they have a good taco deal, I believe its 1.50 a taco or they have a special 3 tacos and 2 sides for 5.50) They have about 5 - 7 lunch specials that are a really good deal. My boyfriend said the Cheese enchilada was really good. They also have your basic bar food on the menu as well, not just Mexican food.

Worst tacos I have ever eaten in my life. You can't put salt and beef together and call it taco meat.

When the 47th and Shawnee Dr location first opened it was much better. This was one my favorite restaurants but there must have been a change in ownership. The menu changed, prices went up and service went down. There are so many choices in Mexican restaurants they should up their game.

Loved the old location and was so excited when they moved closer to my house. However this place has went downhill since the location change! Prices continue to be raised, service is awful every single time, and the menu keeps getting smaller. Tonight will be my last visit. Found plastic in my burrito and when I complained they tried to explain to me that it was from the fryer and completely normal. No one apologized. Disappointed because this place used to be the best mexican restaurant nearby.

I went in for lunch because it's new in the neighborhood but loud sports bar atmosphere isn't really what I like. The food wasn't to my taste either. The filling of the enchilada was bland, grainy hamburger meat, there was too much cheese melted over everything and the sauce was not very flavorful. People must like it, though. It was packed with loud beer drinking Chiefs fans having a wonderful time.

Even though we gave this "new" place a final chance it failed! The menu is expensive and not very common folk friendly. The prices do not reflect the amount. The bartender was super "snooty" and acted like we were interfering with her friends/night. Frankly it's just not fun! Very disappointing and will never return. There was a bartender I loved named Linda however she is no longer bar tending and instead serving occasionally. I'm not sure what occurred here but we will not be back

I really wanted to like this place but there was just 2 problems. 1) I have taste buds 2) The place is ran by thugs The food is plain no flavor at all. The chips are stale and hard. The staff is rude and treat customers like trash. This town has so many great Mexican restaurants please don't waste your time is this dump eating wanna be Mexican food.

The only reason we went here is due to the location. The food with the prior management was just swimming in cheese and grease, with very little flavor left. The atmosphere was horrible, and abnoxiously loud. The staff was horrid... we called ahead to find out if they would turn a game on that we wanted to watch, as they have probably 6 tvs...we asked again when we got there and were flat out ignored. Food was taken back from us by Management after being delivered, very rudely. With the new management, the food has improved slightly by reducing the cheese and grease, but with the menu update, the prices took a sharp increase and all food and drink specials are gone. I ask the wait staff, and they have no idea what the specials are. The atmosphere is better due to just turning down the music a little and hiring better staff. I have seen some improvement, but not enough to justify the steep price hikes.

Suprisingly good. The Pork Verde is the bomb, and there are a lot of sides to choose from, not just rice and beans. I was rather impressed. I will be be back for more. Pork Verde was one of the best I have ever had.

Not sure why all the negativity. I've had a great experience every time I've been here, and I come here ALL THE TIME. I love Taco Tuesday and half price appetizers on Saturdays. Good drinks and drink specials. Everything I've ever eaten here is good. The Amigo Quesadilla is one of my favorites (it includes bacon) and the tequila lime chicken is great. I think that's the only thing my wife has EVER ordered. Their daily specials are on point and always good. The Amigo Dip is an espinaca and one of my favorites in the city. Try it out!

Amigos is an interesting place. Part Mexican restaurant, part sports bar, and I hear that after 10 on a weekend it turns into more of a bar/club type atmosphere? I've never stayed around for that so I can't verify... They serve typical Americanized Mexican food, with lots of cheese. Their chips and salsa are ok, the chorizo dip is pretty good. I have had the fish tacos there and I can't recommend them, a little to fish and greasy for me, but their carnitas taco was pretty good! Check their daily drink specials, and if you like fruity margaritas go for the pomegranate. Also, save room for what I consider to be the best thing about Amigos, their honey sopapillas.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
